Meet Mr Brennan Bucannan, London based Artist & Photographer
BLOOM recently had the chance to sit down with Brennan Bucannan, the London-based photographer whose work is quickly making waves for its bold, almost painterly approach. We first crossed paths when Brennan shot our 001 campaign for BLOOM on a sun-soaked afternoon near London Fields, and his ability to capture light, mood, and texture instantly fit the brand. Whether it’s his talent for finding beauty in the everyday or his deep appreciation for contemporary art, Brennan’s creative vision is one that feels both thoughtful and instinctive. In our chat, we talked about his artistic journey, his current favourite artists, and of course, his effortlessly cool personal style—complete with that iconic haircut. What follows is an insight into the mind of a photographer who’s redefining his craft, one frame at a time.
1.Can you talk us through your photography journey, who or what inspired you to focus your full attention to the medium?
I think I always wanted to be a painter, but that path didn’t seem open to me at the time so I decided to use a camera instead. I recently found out that Irving Penn was also a painter, so there’s something in it for sure. It’s all shapes, light, colour and feeling, plus you get to go on adventures.
2. I know you are a big fan of art, who are some artists you are loving the work of right now?
A huge question. I’ll try to stick with living artists, but Hilma af Klint and Helene Schjerfbeck are two of my favourites. Some contemporaries that stand out to me are; Olafur Eliasson, Ilona Szalay, Zach Zono and George Rouy.
3. You have an iconic haircut and great style to match, what’s your go to outfit for autumn?
Haha, thank you. I’m only really recently learning that I’m more about the shape, cut and fit more than the material or pattern. Play to your strengths and Autumn is the perfect time to get layering which I love. So my go to would be a good pair of straight or slightly flared dark jeans, vest, worn in shirt and a nice jumper. A well-loved jacket over the top if it’s extra chilly. All topped off with plenty of accessories to keep it interesting, belts, badges, keychains, hats and bags.
4. What song would you say describes your style of photography if you had to pick one?
Funnily enough I actually think about this a lot. A dream I’m chasing is how to get across the feeling of music in a photo. Can you hear an image? I’m fascinated in how our individual different senses trigger feelings in the other senses.
If I had to pick a song that people go ‘that sounds like your photo’ I guess I would go with New Town by the absolutely amazing Life Without Buildings.
5.Your favourite coffee shop, restaurant and pub in London?
Coffee has to be Dauns, amazing food too, also the only place in London that sells my mum’s favourite Swedish crisps.
Restaurant would be Gautheir Soho for date night and Purezza for catching up with friends.
Pub, no contest, The George Tavern.
