Meet Matthieu Livingston, a filmmaker and creative force behind Blown Away Studios. From working on major film productions like Vikings, The Last Duel, and Napoleon, to running his own creative space, Matt’s journey has been fueled by a relentless passion for storytelling.
BLOOM recently caught up with Matt to talk about his inspirations, filmmaking experiences, and personal style. We met at Blown Away Studios, his creative hub where he collaborates on projects ranging from live music to exhibitions and supper clubs.
1. Can you share your journey as a filmmaker?
Where did your passion for storytelling begin, and what led you to pursue it full-time?
I’ve been into film and photography for ages, making short films with my friends and entering them into local film festivals. As a teenager, I started working on film sets and got incredibly lucky, landing roles on huge productions like Vikings, The Last Duel, and Napoleon.
The turning point for me was being personally introduced to Ridley Scott by his camera operator.
“Hey, Ridley. This is the kid I was telling you about. The one that makes films?”
“Ah, yes, listen. If you’re not making stuff, it doesn’t mean anything. You’re not going to learn anything on this set or at university. You have to keep making your own work.”
He was exactly how I imagined—quick and direct. I had no choice but to take his advice.
2. What inspires your creative process?
I’m drawn to those who are the best at their craft—it doesn’t matter what it is.
Shoemaking, diving, painting, football, watchmaking—I love the pursuit of perfection, even knowing that it’s impossible. It’s a paradox, but people’s passion pushes them to strive for something unattainable, and that fascinates me.
3. Tell us about Blown Away Studios and how it’s shaped your work.
Blown Away Studios has been a game-changer for me. Having a dedicated space to work, collaborate, and shoot has made such an impact.
It’s not just about filmmaking—it’s a space that hosts live music, exhibitions, supper clubs, and other creative projects. Being surrounded by other artists has exposed me to so much of what’s happening in London’s creative scene right now.
4. Let’s talk about style. Who are your biggest influences in fashion?
Honestly, Tom Ford is my hero. Everything he does has a great story behind it. I know I’m not necessarily the target customer, but I admire his approach to life, branding, and identity. His eye for design is so strong that it even translates into film—I’d love to see him direct a third movie.
Right now, I’m really into Burberry’s collaborations with Alasdair McLellan and Comme des Garçons’ work with Jamie Hawkesworth. The way they weave British heritage into their work is something to be marveled at.
5. What are your favorite spots in London?
Tell us your top picks for a coffee shop, restaurant, and pub.
Near the studio, I’m loving Space Talks for cocktails and a bit of dancing.
For food, Manteca and Brat are go-tos—they never disappoint. Mad Cats recently opened on Redchurch Street, and it’s quickly become a favorite.
And for something more casual, The Griffin is my local pub—I always end up there.
6. What does the future hold for Matthieu Livingston in 2025?
To keep making stuff and telling stories.
Ironically, the more I do, the less I feel I know about filmmaking—there’s just so much to it, which I love. Last year, I worked on a lot of documentaries, but this year I want to focus more on narrative work.
I also want to keep running events at Blown Away Studios, growing the community, and expanding what’s possible in that space.
